Emile is a funny dude. You can tell from his photos that he’s funny. Usually the really skinny kids are. During the trip to Canada that I mentioned in Tony and Tim’s bios, Emile and I hung out quite a bit. We had only just recently signed him to the team, so that trip was really one of the first times I’d ever talked to him. Just before we left, Emile had fallen on a rail while snowboarding and shattered his pelvis, leaving him unable to ride on the trip. The two of us sat around watching everyone else film for the video, laughing a lot and telling jokes all day. A guy like Emile is pretty necessary on trips like that, with a lot of people in tight quarters for days on end. He keeps things light during tense moments and sets the tone for laid back, stress-free days. He’s the type of rider that takes what he does on a skimboard, snowboard, or skateboard seriously enough to continue getting better and more creative, but not so seriously that he fails to have fun on an off-day.
If you read the bio for Tim Mackey, you’ll see the story about 9 of us sleeping in the NWR bus on a road trip. The way the bus is set up, all of the couches fold out into beds. When they’re all folded out, they combine forces to make one super-bed, about 17 feet long by 8 feet wide. The super-bed sleeps no more than 8 people, but since there were 9 of us, Emile volunteered to sleep under the bed that night. There might be 24 inches between the floor and the bottom of the bed, and there is one spot next to a wheel-well that isn’t covered by the bed. The hole is about 20 inches by 20 inches, so Emile wiggled down into it, somehow managed to get his sleeping bag in there, and fell asleep. The way we were all crammed into the bus left my head next to the gap that Emile had crawled into, which was the same hole that his head was situated in so he could breathe. Every time I opened my eyes, there was his face staring up at me...super creepy. When Tim started snoring like a steam-powered locomotive, Emile was stuck under the bed, unable to move because the space was so narrow. I was able to wrap a pillow around my head to dampen the noise, but poor Emile couldn’t move enough to do that. He was stuck there all night, about a foot from the source of the snoring, unable to escape, plug his ears, or roll over. Part of the reason I didn’t go crazy that night was because as bad is it was for all of us on the bed, I kept looking down and Emile looked like he was so claustrophobic and irritated that his head would explode.
