Tony is awesome. It is so obvious to anyone that meets him that the guy LOVES boardsports. Every time I see him and we get to talking, he always seems to bring up some snowboard or skate video and asks me if I’ve seen it. Usually I haven’t and he describes it in full detail. He knows who’s doing what trick, with what type of grab, during which section, set to whichever soundtrack. The guy studies videos like nobody else I know. I think its because he’s so intentional about progressing as a rider himself. He studies other people’s variations of a certain trick and then tries to figure out a way to do it better, or with a different twist.
In 2008, I got to take the whole DB skimboard team on a week-long film trip to Canada in the NWR Tour Bus. We checked out a bunch of different places to ride and everywhere we went he wanted to make sure that I got a chance to skimboard. I knew that I was there as a driver and I also wanted to make sure that I was helping out however I could while the guys were filming for ‘Nice Pop,’ but Tony would always make sure that if I wanted to ride I got to ride. That’s something I’ll always appreciate. He was also the only one out of the 9 of us that refused to skimboard naked when we stumbled upon a nude beach with some good riding conditions on that trip. I don’t know if that’s because he didn’t see the point in running around naked with a bunch of guys (I think most people can respect that decision), or if it was because he saw the potential risk for sand-burn. Either way, I thought that might make an interesting side-note.
