-foreword by Greg Young-

The first time I met Chris was on a houseboat trip on Lake Roosevelt in 2005.  There were at least 20 or 25 of us crammed onto the houseboat for a week, and when you’re in tight quarters with that many people you quickly find out who you get along with and who you’d like to push off the top deck when nobody’s looking.  Chris and I got along great right from the start and spent a lot of the week hanging out.  When the majority of the people on the trip had to leave a day early to get back to work, a small crew of us stayed behind since the houseboat had been paid for and we had nowhere to be. When 20 people clear out of a houseboat after 5 days, there is inevitably a TON of leftover food, drinks, etc.  By the time the early-departure crew had abandoned ship and our skeleton crew was ready to set sail for open water, we had a half dozen coolers full of random food.  That night we prepared a huge feast of everything that was leftover: steak, barbequed pork loin, hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, pasta...you name it.  We ate until we were bursting at the seams.  The next morning, as we slowly motored down the lake towards the marina we realized there was absolutely no way we had room in our cars to take home any of the leftovers from the previous night’s feast.  Chris had the bright idea to pull out the giant slingshot that had gotten us into trouble a few times during the trip, and dispose of our leftovers in fashion.  For the better part of an hour, we launched every last morsel of food on the boat towards the cliffs 100 yards away.  It took two people to hold the slingshot and one to aim and fire (you know the kind I’m talking about), and I vividly remember how hard we were laughing as we launched untouched slabs of filet mignon, as well as scoops of potato salad and Costco hot dogs into the air, spackling everything we put in the crosshairs.

After that first trip, I’ve been on a few more houseboat trips with Chris, in addition to some other camping trips and days on the lake.  For a couple of years, I thought that Chris was into wakeboarding more than anything, only to find out he’s a super-talented snowboarder. In 2009 he took the 2nd place trophy in his division at the Mount Baker Legendary Banked Slalom.  We just put some huge custom stickers on Chris’s truck, and the guy must live at Mount Baker since I get a call or email practically daily from people telling us they spotted his truck up there.
